Could someone please give me some good ideas for lunch besides pb&j or ham and cheese? I know my son is getting burnt out on these already. He doesn't like "lunchables". Anybody have any good ideas???
Check out www.iLunchBox.com. They have nothing but great ideas for portable lunches, even for vegetarians. There are tips on food safety and articles on nutrition as well. You can sign up and get the newsletter so that you are always being inspired!
PS: stay away from the launches, they are no good for you or your child. My children's favorite lunches tend to be the ploughman's lunch. I can use the leftovers from dinner, fresh fruits or veg and some whole grain crackers or bread. Like a homemade lunchable.
Have you ever tried a peanut butter and "fluff" sandwich? Fluff is a marshmallow-type cream that goes really well with peanut butter. I actually mix them together before putting them on the sandwich, and it isn't quite as messy when eaten. Cream cheese and jelly or peanut butter and honey are good sandwich options, too; I've never actually had a peanut butter and banana sandwich, but I've heard they're are good. If your child is willing to eat canned chicken, you can drain it, add mayo. and just a touch of honey, and that makes a delicious sandwich; you can add cheese, if you want. You may also want to try a grilled bologna and cheese sandwich (if he doesn't mind eating it cold/room temperature). If you have a thermos, you can try lots of different ideas with that - soup, pastas, etc. I hope this is helpful.
Mmmm...apple slices and peanut butter sounds good. I've never tried that. I know my son loves apples and caramel dipping sauce...I could do that sometimes. Thanks for the idea.
I did buy him a food container (thermos) and it is working great so far. I've sent him chicken noodle soup, chicken and rice, spagetti and meatballs and yesterday I sent him barbecued meatballs....he really loved that. I don't really know how warm it is when he eats it, but he's eating it and that's all that matters. lol It's supposed to keep food warm for 5 hours. He eats lunch pretty early...10:50. Now I've been trying to think of some ideas for the thermos. Any ideas??? I'll still send a sandwich now and then just for a change. But poor fellow, he was sick to death of a sandwich everyday. lol I'm glad I bought the thermos.
I sent him some cold pizza yesterday and he loved it.....and so did another kid who begged for some until my son gave him a piece. lol I told him next time he better at least get something for trade.
I also bought my own crackers, cheese and lunch meat to make my own lunchables. I've decided to get him a small food thermos, too...one that's easy to open. That way, I can send him soups and leftovers.
My children don't like lunchables either. But, if I send them meat cubes and cheese cubes and a few whole grain crackers, they eat it up. I always add a fruit and usually some yogurt. This provides plenty of protein to get them through the day. They have actually told me that they aren't as hungry when they come home if I packed their lunch than if they ate at school.
Whatever you make for dinner, make enough to pack for lunch a day or two during the week. Chances are he likes his dinner, so why not have it for lunch. It will be room temperature by the time he eats it and that is OK.
HI RRW777,
The cookie cutters do not cut through the bread very well so we make an imprint and then use the kitchen scissors.
My husband likes to add a note several times a week telling our daughter how much we love her or how proud of her we are. She really digs that.
Thanks for the tip, venicefreebird.
I'm gonna have to send him pizza one day. I haven't yet. Who doesn't like cold pizza??? I'm gonna do that Monday. I sent him peanut butter on a hamburger roll today. I've been buying different types of granola bars and putting them in his lunch. He likes that.
I've heard a lot of people talking about using cookie cutters on the sandwiches. I'm gonna have to try that, too. I've got a HUGE container of tons of cookie cutters that I've collected. I probably have one for every holiday. I'm gonng try that, too. Do they cut through the bread pretty good? That would make his sandwiches a little more fun and exciting.
Thanks again for the ideas.
My daughter doesn't always get a sandwich. We buy small pizza's and cut them up into 4 pieces and send that in her sandwich holder. We also like to take cheese sticks and wrap them in sliced ham or turkey. We make cookie cutter sandwiches and cut them in whacky pieces like a puzzle. Different cheeses and crackers are great. Chicken wraps are easy to make. We also include a handful of nuts for snack to ease her hunger. Different types of fruits, yogurt drinks and we buy those small foil wrapped chocolate's and include one. She also loves tuna sandwiches.
try making simple 'burritos'. Just buy some tortilla bread, shredded cheese, chicken (cook it the day before and store it for the week), and some sauces that your son likes. They're easy and fun!
