I'm thinking about moving to Arizona & I want to know if the schools there teach in spanish?

We live in Wisconsin & the school my daughter attends teaches both in English & Spanish. I don't want her to lose the Spanish part of her learning. I'm thinking of moving to the Tempe Mesa area. I grew up & went to school in Wisconsin & don't know much about schools else where. Help

Summit School of Ahwatukee (www.summitschoolaz.org) has a Spanish class as part of the curriculum. The Spanish program focuses on curriculum that is hands-on and real world. The activities are based on music, chants, TPR (total physical response – language in action), manipulatives, arts, games, videos, computer, thematic units, books, magazines, maps, globes, graphs, guest speakers and culture of Spanish speaking countries.

A law was passed recently that bars teachers from giving instruction or lessons in Spanish, as part of an effort to increase the English fluency of non-native speakers. The only thing that teachers are allowed to do is clarify a set of instructions- they are not allowed to give lessons at all, unless it is part of the curriculum, as in a Spanish course or ESL class.

Fortunately, there is a large hispanic population here, so she will likely be able to practice with other students.

Use this excellent Great Schools website to find the Tempe and Mesa schools you are interested in and then contact them directly about their bilingual services. Bilingual education is offered here, but since I am not an expert in this field I cannot steer you to a particular school. In my personal opinion, Tempe is more progressive a school district then Mesa, but Mesa has a significant Hispanic population so I would guess that bilingual ed would not be hard to come by. Hope this helps.

erica2150,

You may not know this is a national forum so many people who live in AZ might not see your question. You may want to re post this in the local section for AZ residents to find more Arizonans. I do happen to live in Arizona I have lived here on and off and gone to school here since I was sixteen. I have never heard of a school teaching in both languages except for Spanish courses. If it turns out there is not one here that should not be too big of a problem there is a large Hispanic pop. here so she should have plenty of opportunities to continue to use and learn the Spanish language. If that is not enough you can hire a tutor or she can continue to learn on her own at your local library.
