I'm thinking about moving to Arizona & I want to know if the schools there teach in spanish?

We live in Wisconsin & the school my daughter attends teaches both in English & Spanish. I don't want her to lose the Spanish part of her learning. I'm thinking of moving to the Tempe Mesa area. I grew up & went to school in Wisconsin & don't know much about schools else where. Help

Debbs01,

With all due respect, I lived in Tucson many years (Wildact, UA) and now reside in Phoenix. They both have their positive attributes, only that Tucson folks spend an inordinate amount of time trashing Phoenix...those of us who've lived in Tucson as well, know better.....(wink, wink).

The International School of Tucson has dual-immersion French / English, German / English and Spanish / English programs (and Tucson is nicer than Phoenix anyway!!).

Summit School of Ahwatukee (www.summitschoolaz.org) has a Spanish class as part of the curriculum. The Spanish program focuses on curriculum that is hands-on and real world. The activities are based on music, chants, TPR (total physical response – language in action), manipulatives, arts, games, videos, computer, thematic units, books, magazines, maps, globes, graphs, guest speakers and culture of Spanish speaking countries.

A law was passed recently that bars teachers from giving instruction or lessons in Spanish, as part of an effort to increase the English fluency of non-native speakers. The only thing that teachers are allowed to do is clarify a set of instructions- they are not allowed to give lessons at all, unless it is part of the curriculum, as in a Spanish course or ESL class.

Fortunately, there is a large hispanic population here, so she will likely be able to practice with other students.
