MY child just turned 4 in September. I'm considering Public School as on-going school. When should I apply?

Anonymous
Can I wait another year to apply for KG? What are the standardized tests that my child should take before applying for schools outside my district? When should my child take the tests?

If you're in NYC, Universal Pre-K would have started this year, with Kindergarten starting next year. You have the choice to delay starting school until age 6, but she would go directly into 1st grade and be behind her peers. Testing for gifted and talented takes place towards the beginning of the year; preschoolers will take it at the beginning of 2009.

I don't know about areas outside of NYC, but in the city you don't have a choice at what age you start your child in Kindergarten - either you start her in K the year she turns 5 or you wait until she's 6 and put her in 1st.

I have found through speaking to teacher's , who are friends of mine, that it show's in their maturity, as far as the 3 or4 Th grade... i would suggest putting her in pre-school, and then speak with them at the end of the school year as to whether, they think she is ready.(NOT a day-care but a pre-school) hope this helps..
