Why do the schools have combined grade classes?

princessmom
Our daughters school has 1 2nd grade class and 1 2/3 grade class, then they have 1 3rd grade class (she is in that class) and another 2/3 grade class. I don't understand why they combine the classes.

I am asking those in the Seattle area for advice.

It depends, sometimes it's part of the philosophy of the school (some alternative schools do this). Sometimes it's so that kids can be assigned based on their academic level not their age. Sometimes it's just because they have too many of one grade to fit in one room and too few for two. (That may be the most common reason, especially if it isn't an alternative school) Why don't you ask your principal, or a teacher? (I would just say "I'm curious, why do you do it this way..." so they don't think you're complaining (even if you are!).)

I still do not know why the combine the grades in some classes, no one signs up for these classes, the principal is the one who assigns the teachers to the students.

I'm not in a district where this happens and I'm really not sure why your district does it... but perhaps the 2/3 grade classes are for children who are looking for a transition class. Some students might sign up for the 2/3 class may not feel confident (academically or socially) in enrolling in the 3rd grade class.
