What are Sarah Palin's views on education?

lisaedit
She didn't really touch on education in her speech last night, but according to Education Week and other publications I've read, she believes that creationism and evolution should be taught in the schools although she hasn’t pushed that into law in Alaska. She did push for and got more money for schools in Alaska. See more on her education views here:

I agree, it was an oversimplification. I guess what I was trying to say was, like you said, they felt they were superior and were merely trying to justify their land grab. I've always felt it was less out of a true desire to save the Indians, but an excuse to ease guilt.
And I am by no means an expert and have NO specific studies on the subject. My info was from personal reading and observation of history. I appreciate your feedback and expertise.

What do you base your statement on Manifest Destiny on? I'll tell you up front that I have a university background (University of Arizona) in American Indian Studies, and I found your reply to be totally lacking in historical accuracy and at best an oversimplification. Even Encyclopedia Britannica touches upon the overzealous Protestant ministers of the time and their interpretation of Manifest Destiny, and other scholarly accounts discuss the prevailing attitude of the time that the Anglo race was superior and thus a justification for taking the land away from the native inhabitants (part and parcel of the ideology of Manifest Destiny). I ask you this question not to appear superior, but because I whole heartedly encourage you to re-read the history of the American Indians and the clash of the European settlers. I will also be happy to share with you in more depth what my background in this period of history is, if you are interested of course. One place for you to start for a more accurate picture of what took place is the history of the Carlisle School in Pennsylvania. You might find if "enlightening".

sforsmo,
Actually, Manifest Destiny was about land acquisition and settling. Most settlers were less concerned about what the native Indians believed, but where they lived. They simply wanted to take over. It wasn't really a religious thing.

If parents want their children informed about God and Creationism, they should do so in their house of worship, not in the public schools. Oh ye of little faith, if you truly believe the world is 6000 years old, then surely a high school science class should not be able to shake your faith or your child's. But what I suspect this is more about is indoctrination. All of you on here spouting what the Founding Fathers meant, believed and so forth, should reread your history and recall why Europeans came here in the first place.....religious freedom. Too bad they didn't respect the Indians' right to believe what they did. Does Manifest Destiny ring a bell? Methinks a history lesson is in order.

You said: "The Constitution of the United States was based on "One Nation under God".

Actually, one nation under God is in the pledge of Allegiance, and was only put there by Eisenhower.

As for the religious convictions of the founding fathers, they were deist, believed there was a supreme being, but there are many writings stating they did not believe in a particular supreme being.

This said, I have no problem that the various stories of the creation of the world be taught in a social study class. After all, they are essential in understanding the rest of our culture and the cultures around us. But they are NOT science.
