Can I ask what makes you believe your son is not great in reading comprehension? Has he ever been formally evaluated? Does he struggle to explain stories verbally and with writing as well? (It also involved organizing ones thoughts and being able to express them.) Sometimes, kids can be good "decoders" as far as individual words, but they have a weak working memory, and they can't remember what they read in earlier paragraphs. As fancyena mentioned, you can sit with your son, and have him start by reading a few sentences, stopping, and explaining it to you in his own words. You might even have him jot down a couple of "keywords" like notes, that can help him recall. Then read a bit more, and do the same thing. It should gradually help him to understand and remember what he's read. If he continues to struggle, there's a program called "Visualizing/verbalizing" that Lindamood Bell offers (it's expensive) but it helps kids to picture what they're reading, and that often helps with their recall and comprehension. It's particularly useful with children who have learning disabilities, that don't learn in "conventional" ways.

Dear maggie, that's simple...(I had to do this with my son) what you can do is sit with your child and let him read to you out loud (just a paragraph at a time) and ask him what the paragraph means; if he does not understand the full message, make him read it again and again with the correct punctuation and all until he can tell you what it means in his own words. This may take a while, and you may have to explain the paragraphs to him in the beginning, and slowly but surely you will see that he will start to understand. I have 2 children and they are GATE (gifted), but even all gifted children have a weakness. Don't worry... Good luck to you.
