In Fl usually the teacher makes the recommendation for a child to be tested for the school's gifted program. In my county's website it says a parent can also make the recommendation. But I'm not sure if they will do it base on a parents recommendation alone.

You probably can get info on available programs, testing and qualification on your state's DOE website and county's DOE site. Good luck!

Well, I guess it depends on where you live. I live in Ny and it's what we did. It worked out well.

We went in with a positive attitude. The school does the best they can for him. It's not perfect. They can only do what they can do.... they have a lot of kids with a lot of needs.

Start first with you child's school or your school district.... you might be surprised.

I have a gifted son and my husband and i realized he was gifted before he was in kindergarden! But his teacher didn't want to accept it! So we took our son out of the school he went to and changed schools! He has excelled in the past from his past two grades that schools that he went too!He went to two grade schools not becasue of the schools where not challenging! But becasue of health reasons! Our son to this very day likes to be challenged from us at home by playing board games and card games at home! He even likes to watch the discovery channel and the learning channel too! I have to let you know that in my past experince with our son! That even though he was tested for his learning gift! The teachers told us when he was in first grade that he wasn't able to skip a grade because his reading level wasn't high! Even though his skills where high! If your child gets bored real easily at school and he or she gets there work done before the other kids! Than you have a gifted son or daughter! Also! You could find a way to have your son or daughter tested outside of school from a counselor!

With all due respect, very few states (PA being an exception) have guidelines for educating gifted students. Most schools will NOT test for anything other than learning disabilities, because there's a federal law called "child find" that requires them to identify kids at risk. Few schools will test for giftedness unless they routinely test all students for entry into such a program.
