In most schools now at days what may have been 3rd or 4th grade work in our day is now 1st or 2nd. Most schools are getting kids involved in science at a younger age . If you are not sure what the teacher is asking you to explain to him call her/him and ask . I am sure the teacher will be glad to help you with anything you need .
You have posted your question on a nationwide website, not on a specific school's website. You probably need to call your son's teacher and ask.
I'm wondering if you're simply talking about solid, liquid, and gas states, which can easily be demonstrated to your son by showing him that liquid water can turn solid when it freezes, and then if you put the ice cube in a pan and heat it up, it will melt and then evaporate into the air, which is it's gaseous form? You could also explain to your son that clouds contain water vapor and depending on the temperature, they'll fall to the ground as liquid rain or more solid snow..... Kids in 1st grade can understand, they don't have to wait until 3rd or 4th grade to be exposed to science...
