Hi betinjo,
Just to clarify - it sounds like your son was receiving a specific program in accordance with his IEP and that program is only offered in a school within your district that is far away?
What kind of services does he get? If you are concerned wtih the location of the services that are being offered, I would recommend calling an IEP team meeting. State your concerns and perhaps the team can work with you to adjust the services so that he can stay in the school that is closer to home.
However, if he is in a special program, sometimes schools consolidate all the children with similar programs to one school so that they have enough students to run the program.
Feel free to fill us in on some of the details, and maybe we can help you negotiate an alternative plan.
I know what it stands for my son is in the program for 5 yrs now davison, michigan is by flint and Im just seeing if there was other schools that have the program in my district because they only have one school that has it and its farther away from where i live and i want find something closer to home..thats why i moved where i am school he was in 10 minutes away and the program was moved to another school 35 minutes away and im not to happy about it because i wasnt told at all the kids were going to another school at all and i want to move him different school but what can i do nothing..
I'm not sure where Davidson is, but IEP stands for Individualized Educational Plan, and ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THE U.S. are required to provide FAPE (free, appropriate public education) to children.
An IEP is intended for students who have special education needs that go beyond what can be met in a classroom situation without individualization. A good site to learn more about IEPs is www.wrightslaw.com, and I'd also encourage you to join Greatschools Learning and Attention Difficulties Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554
