New to the 504 plan for my step daughter. Help.

karinka72778
I have a 12 year old step daughter who just started the 7th grade and I was told by her grandparents that the school does not comply at all with her special needs. What are the basics and if they have been having nothing but trouble what can I bring different to the table to help my daughter?

I am also a step parent for a 13 year old girl. I am a teacher and have been teaching for going on 11 years. A section 504 is like an IEP in that is requires your childs school to do certain things to ensure your child is successful in her academics. If they aren't doing what her 504 says they are liable ... very liable.

Michellea always asks pertinent questions and gives good resources...I "second" the suggestion to repost your questions, with more background information, in the Learning and Attention Difficulties group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554

Hi karinka and welcome!

I'm not clear on whether or not your SD has a 504 already or if she needs one? Also, I am wondering what her needs are and whether or not a 504 is sufficient? Perhaps she would do better with an IEP and gain the protections of IDEA, federal special ed law. Here is a link that explains the two plans.

In general, an IEP offers you more protections and services. If you are having difficulty with compliance, you may want to push for one.

In the meantime, you may want to check out the Attention and learning difficulties group here at GS. You will find a lot of savvy members that understand the issues you are dealing with. community.greatschools.net/groups/11554

If you decide to post more - it would be helpful if you gave a few more details such as what kinds of compliance issues you are having and the kinds of accommodations listed in her 504.
