HA! I live 20 miles from my son's PUBLIC SCHOOL! And it's worth it because we have finally found a wonderful public school....but the gas is a major expense, though not as much as private school tuition. As far as the friends nearby issue, the neighborhood we are currently in has always been fragmented in terms of where the kids go to school (I'm in Phoenix). My son does after school stuff and music so by the time he gets home there really isn't much time to play with kids in the neighborhood anyway. We will probably be moving into his present school district next year ....providing we can sell our house in the current market and state of affairs!
My son's private elementary school was only about 4 miles away, but it drew children from as far as 40 miles away, and while that made socializing more difficult, it wasn't impossible...more organized clubs/events were scheduled after school, so teachers and parent volunteers hosted those sorts of "playdates," instead of kids going to individual people's houses. (ie, students might participate in scouting, or Lego League, or sports)
We live about 40 miles away - 90 minute drive during rush hour.
It's a specialized school so the pro's outweigh the con's. But, maintaining friendships both from school and the community is a challenge and one we work at actively.
I'd prefer him to school in the community, but given his learning disabilities, this private school placement is a wonderful option.
