You know if your child should skip a grade, is there a test or help for us to get her where she belongs?

Anonymous
My daughter will be entering 3rd grade, but she is very advanced fro her age. She is at a 8th grade reading level, 6 grade science and understanding,6 grade problem sloving, and she is advanced with her math and personal skills also. She understands a lot of what is going on in the world, around her, and what will ahppen if one thing leads to another. At her previous school the principal and her main teacher told me to stop working with her. Then after she would get done with a project in class in half the time as everyone else, the teacher would tell her just to turn her paper over and draw. I would like fo rher to be alot more challenged and to make her feel like it is okay to be smart,
I would love tohave her tested or something for advancement into another grade if possible, but I am very timid about it because I don't like to be treated like I am doing something wrong. Ijust would love what's best for my daughter.
Thank you
Jenn

Many states post their assessment test online (in all subject area). Take some of these asessment tests and you should have a good feeling where your child is.

omg! First, don't worry about other people. You are your child's best advocate. My daughter skipped 3rd grade. Our situation was much like yours. I contacted the principle of the school and said I would like to discuss grade acceleration. The school was very much aware of my child's gift, but it took that phone call to get things moving. My daughter was then given the state test for identifying Gifted/Talented students administered by the district school psychologist. (a test that is not normally given until the end of third grade)Once they determined her i.q. and confirmed the obvious she was set to enter 4th grade in the fall. Our principle told me that in his eight years as principle there had never been a grade acceleration. BECAUSE I SPOKE UP AND MADE SURE MY DAUGHTER GOT THE ATTENTION SHE NEEDED. Now in fourth grade, she has very little time to draw on the back of her paper. After that I was asked to serve as the parent representative for our school on the G/T association. Now I can help others in my community.
Does your district have a G/T (gifted and talented) association? If so, find out who the director is and make a call. He/she will be happy to help you.
I hope you could make sense of my rambling. Hope it helped. I would love to hear how this turns out. Best of luck.

Ienjoy soup gave you the best reference I can think of for your child. I would then suggest you google Davidson Institute for Talent Development and see if that organization would be helpful. They have a Young Scholars program if your child meets criteria. Good Luck!

Is your daughter in a public school or private school? Do they have a "gifted/talented" program available in your school district? If not, have you approached the principal about what it would take to have your daughter move into 4th right now?

There have been several recent discussions about children skipping grades, although most of them have focused on kids in 1st & 2nd grade... I'll be honest, I skipped in the middle of 3rd grade to the middle of 4th grade, and I wish my parents had done it earlier, because the older girls get, the harder it is to "break into" groups of friends that have already formed. Academically, I was glad to have more challenging coursework, and I still was always near the top of the classes, but socially, I felt like an "outsider." (Of course, I didn't really feel close to many kids in the lower grade, either, since my interests and abilities were much different than theirs.)
