It's funny that someone mentioned Steven King. I just purchased two of his books for my 13 year old son. I picked up "The Long Walk" and "The Tower". Both books he did not ask for but I am trying to encourage him to read more and those books I enjoyed as a young person.
I am a huge Steven King fan so being able to share those stories is great. We started reading "The Stand" together.
Like TJ said every school district will have their own guidelines etc.
I remember Stephen King being in the high school library when I was in high school. Though his writing may not appeal to everyone, scary books can help some reluctant readers pick up a book.
The biggest book I read at the time was a Stephen King book. "The Stand" about a virus that wipes out almost all the population. And I did read my first Stephen King at 13 it was Carrie.
If your child does like him and they are banned they will have to go to the local library and read at home.
