How do YOU rate California schools?

tjlove
The CST results were released yesterday and showed an overall improvement statewide. However, the majority of students are still not proficient in core subjects.
Even more troubling, according to the SF Chronicle, is the widening of the achievement gap. How can local communities and schools work together to help raise proficiency on standardized tests? What, if anything do you do at home to help prepare your kids for taking standardized tests?

Truckeemom, you really over-estimated the "private school industry's" ability to generate negative press about public schools. Private schools, despite the tuition they charge, have limited resources. They'd rather focus these resources on educating their students than bad-mouthing public schools. Just walk around your average middle class elementary, middle or high school and you'll see why the stats cited above are quite evident. The decline in general student achievement doesn't have anything to do with public or private schools, but rather what is valued at home and at school. If kids/parents don't value classroom education, no test strategies will ever be able to reverse the trend.

Have been very pleasantly surprised by CA public schools, given all the negative press they recieve. Have found the public schools to be much higher quality and more inclusive and welcoming than the private. Most of the negative press seems to be generated by the private school industry.

I'm sure that the large number of illegal immigrants have a lot to do with lower test scores.

California schools are clearly all over the place academically, which is why school choice is essential for families to be able to find a school where they can feel their children are in a safe learning environment.
