All public schools are mandated by Federal Law IDEA to provide a free and appropriate public education to individuals with identified disabilities. If your student hasn't been identified by the local school, as for a student study team meeting or directly for an Individual Education Program assessment. As a special educator, I see many parents who diagnose their own children with learning disabilities and serve those who are identified after appropriate assessment. It's up to you, as the parent, to know the types of accommodations/modifications recommended for educational purposes, talk to teachers and administrators to make certain your child is receiving services to ensure progress toward grade level standards. Unfortunately, attention was added under Specific Learning Disability category a few years ago, leading to a up-surge in students with inappropriately labeled LD eligibility. ADD and ADHD are medical diagnoses, requiring a physician, not some teachers opinion of a student who doesn't attend to lessons. Kids need to learn to be responsible for their own behavior and learning, in conjunction with parents, teachers and their local community. There are great programs everywhere for students with learning disabilities. Some of the worst programs, in my opinion, are in isolation at a private school that does not have to adhere to No Child Left Behind standards for educators.

My daughter actually attends a private for only kids with LD's. I just found the school last year but I am sure there are more out there. Some of the kids who attend this school come from pretty far away.

In addition to your geographic location, could you give a bit of info about the student's learning profile? What kind(s) of LD? How severe? What age? Are you looking for a private or public school? How far are you willing to travel?

You might also re-post in the learning and attention challenges group - there are many members that have a lot of info and experience with learning disabilities.http://community.greatschools.net/groups/11554
