How Do I change policy on Phys. Ed?

momchee1
Here in Kentucky, there is not mandate for physical education. In our school system it is left up to the individual schools. I would love to hear from others who have made possible this change in policy on how to approach it, best parties to start with and some ideas about specific wording to get a bill passed in our state for mandated physical education.

Thank you, Debi

I live in Idaho and any time I have an issue with anything in the schools I start with my children's school district and move on up the ladder. I email and write letters and continue the process until I get answers. I also try to get as many parents involved as I can. Sometimes parents are not aware of certain issues because it does not involve their child. Physical education involves every child in the U.S. especially since we have the largest obesity rate in children. That should tell any group something. Physical education is so important to everyone, especially our children. Good habits start at young ages!

VT is a long way off from Kentucky. I am thinking that I will have to start with our local state representatives. Altho, I fear that it will not be high on their priority list. This was a School Site Base Counsel decision. In Kentucky each school and district can make their own decision, when there are not part of the Kentucky School Advisory board's "rules" of the week.

Thank you for the options, Michellea. However it has been the School Site Based Counsel, which is comprised of the Principal, Teachers and 3 parent represenatives. Unfortunatly I did not win one of those spots during election. I will keep trying.

In my state, PE is covered by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and it is mandated.

I would imagine that there might be a host of potential advocates for PE that you could team up with:
1. Teachers Union
2. Medical Groups
3. Childrens advocacy groups including special ed, Girl and boy scouts, mental health organizations.

Most states list their policies on their department of education websites. This would be a good resource to survey how various states word educational requirements in general and PE in particular.

The only reason I'm trying to combine this with P.E. is because I'm trying to avoid budget issues with various schools.

I don't know. I'm in the process now of e-mailing all superintendants that I can reach from listings under Vt suprevisory union schools. It's a start. I feel it should be mandatory but I'm not sure what the ropes are. I'm hoping for alot of support and help to push this through!
