Are you restricted to the city of Chicago itself? How far out in the suburbs can you go? Are you interested in
private or parochial schools? What are your restrictions?

The reason why Healthy11 & I ask these questions is because is a huge area. The city itself has a terrible reputation for public schools, but there are many exceptions. Particularly the northwest side, like Jefferson Park or Edgebrook have better schools. But it can be very spotty. There are very obscenely wealthy urban areas, and trendier gentrifying areas and there are very very bad areas. And there are the blue-collar bungalow type areas. Some of these very different areas are very close to each other and attendance areas can include several types of neighborhoods.

Then there are the suburbs. North and northwest suburbs are probably the safest bets for good schools, but there are also great broad areas to the west or southwest.

We really need to know more about what type of neighborhood you're looking for.

I would reiterate that the Northwest section of Chicago, near the border of suburbs like Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles, and Park Ridge, are considered among the nicest family areas in the city and they have generally good schools...

I don't have a home yet .. I am looking for areas with good school to help me determine where I am going to live.. I don't want to have to tranfer my children once they start school.

Have you already purchased a home somewhere? If not, I can tell you that the Northwest part of Chicago is generally considered to have good schools, but the entire city has a program of excellent "magnet schools" that pull students from all over. Testing is required to have an opportunity to attend the magnet schools, and I don't know all the details about them, but I'm sure you could find out from talking to a Chicago Public School representative... My nephew attended Whitney Young Magnet School and was offered full 4-year college scholarships at several places after he graduated...

I live in a suburb of Chicago, and my brother-in-law's family lives within the city limits. Chicagoland is a huge area, and it takes more than an hour (in non-rush hour traffic) to get from one end of the city to the other...If you consider living in a suburban area, many people commute downtown using the Metra train. Have you already purchased a home somewhere? Can you be more specific about whether you are just looking for public school, or private?
