I'm relocating from Scotland to West Chester PA, and looking for good elementary and middle schools.

I have heard that the Great Valley School District is good, but since we don't know how long our stay will be, it is important that the high school is also good. My two boys would be entering at Kindergarten and Second Grade. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Just so you are aware there are 3 school districts that serve West Chester. There is Downingtown (has a so so rating), West Chester (better), and then Unionville Chadds Ford (one of the top schools in state of Pa.)

I would highly recommend the Unionville Chadds Ford school district. My daughter is currently enrolled in Pocopson Elementary (one of the 3 elementary schools part of Unionville Chadds Ford) and she LOVES it. The school is only 6 years old and is fabulous. The test scores for all levels (from elementary to high school) are some of the top in the State.

That being said, the High School needs major work and a referendum is being proposed to rehab the entire thing. It needs it. Hopefully, that will take place before my daughter enters High School.

Also, real estate in the Unionville Chadds Ford area is pricey and there are few rentals. Just another thing to keep in mind.

Good luck.

Unfortunately, while Greatschools rates public schools across the U.S., they don't necessarily have members who live in every town, or with children at every school in each town, to be able to give you a first-hand response to your question. Have you tried using their "Research and Compare" feature by clicking on the green menu bar near the top of this page? You can then enter the city/state and grade levels you're interested in, (from elementary to high school) and see what schools are in the region...You can then click on the individual school names to get more details.
