how can I find a quality high school that will accept my daughter even though we live in Detroit?

shawni413
For the interests that my daughter has going into the 10th grade we are not satisfied with the high school choices in Detroit. We tested at a school in Redford and scored two points below minimum in math for acceptance as a non-resident. I don't have the means to move before the school year begins but would like my daughter to have the opportunity to attend a school that can truly prepare her for college. Her interests are in performing arts. If anyone has any ideas I would be more than happy to hear them. Thanks!

i know this answer is coming late for you, but Renaissance is an excellent Detroit Public School & even though they are a college prep school they have an excellent fine arts department. I and my husband are graduates of the school(not the new building) and are looking forward to sending our children there.

You must be tested to get in so I'm not sure if your daughter will be able to test in, but if she has excellent grades at her current school you may be able to make a plea for entrance.
hope this helps

this answer is kind of late, but Arts Academy in the Woods, a highschool in Fraser, Mi (Groesbeck & Utica) (it's about 20 min driving from hamtramck) is a wonderful school. both of my children went there, my son graduated and my daughter is still there) You might want to check it out. They have their own website and I can't recommend it enough. They have an emphasis on the arts (all arts) but their curriculum is absolutely wonderful.

you should try detroit school of arts on selden (where aaliyah the singer/actress attended). i don't have a child in high school yet but i am considering this one when she does go because she loves to dance, and check out the reviews on this site.

Unfortunately, Greatschools is a nationwide forum, and the chance of finding someone from the same town with a child of a similar age and with similar interests (so they can give you a good recommendation) is slim.
Would your daughter be allowed to re-take the non-resident test again, if you got her some math tutoring?
