Why doesn't anyone see anything wrong?

Anonymous
In my neighboring town there are 35 special education teachers and 28 regular teachers - for grades K - 4th! There are only 357 students! Does anyone see a HUGE problem or is it just me?

Yes it sounds to me like the school needs a simpilar ciriculem to set a base foundation for the kids. If so many need a special ed teacher.

The district is obligated to provide children with disabities a Free and Appropriate Public Education. Depending upon a student's profile, this may require very small teacher student ratio's, specialized instruction and other care. Many schools offer special ed teachers part time jobs. Perhaps the numbers seem out of whack because you are looking at bodies rather than FTE (full time equivelent head count). Also - are you sure all of the special ed teachers are in fact teachers? Often times schools have OT, PT, SLP, teachers aids, medical personnel offering special ed services. They may or may not be "teachers" in the formal sence of the word.

Sometimes school districts offer special ed classes and open them up to other communities. Ths helps to gather enough critical mass to justify in house special ed services while keeping down costs. Might your neighbors have a situation like this? Perhaps they are taking students (and charging tuition) from other towns. This might impact the ratios somewhat.

What most concerns you about this situation? Does the school system in your neighboring town have a direct impact on your own situation?

Without understanding the details of the situation, I couldn't comment on whether or not it is a HUGE problem. Perhaps they need more teachers, perhaps they are over-staffed. The best thing to do is go to school committee meetings, ask questions and vote.
