He is on about a 3rd or 4th grade level. Is there anything I could do for him at this point that is not to costly. His reading in the worst. I make him read all the time but he really hates to.

Your school should have noticed the ld? If he isn't a Special Education with and IEP and a BIP, you need to request that he get evaluated and send letter to principal requesting an ARD. If he is a s.e. with an IEP you need to send letter to principal stating that his IEP is failing and you want an ARD to determine what they are going to do to help your child to read at an 8th grade level? If you feel that you have not gotten your point accross you need to contact an advocate. try advacocy inc, lolalee liviingston, region 10 may be able to answer questions ask for Pam Baker. You may also try Partner Resource Network, ask for Daphny Cunningham.

My son is dyslexic and also in the 8th grade. We are in Richardson School District and they have a pull out class that does Scottish Rite program. I am told that Dallas school district has a school for LD. We did pull out for two years in grade school. Last year we were temporarily out of state and did a private LD school. The improvement was amazing. He went up several grade levels in both reading and math. This year we are back in public and he is in all AP classes. He has been making all A's and B's. I credit the LD school. If you are interested, Dallas Academy seems less expensive than some of the others.

Yes there is! Go to your child's school counselor or principal and ask for classes or even testing to help your child achieve his goals!

I used to teach math/computers at a school for LD kids. You should check out Fairhill School in Dallas. They are located on Preston Road just south of Plano. Their website is www.fairhill.org. Another school is Winston School....Good luck...JohnK

Check out Southwest Academy in Allen, Texas. I've heard good things about the school. It is a school specifically for children with learning differences. They also do testing and evaluations for both adults and children. We are interested in the school for our daughter who is having difficulty. Blessings!

He does have an IEP and he has lots of accomedations. Does that mean he should have these accomedations all his life and it never get better? If he just learned how to read well alot of this could be taken care of. That is his biggest weakness to me. All the other problem kind of stem from not being able to read. The school district has done ok but middle school is harder to know what is going on cause he has so many teachers. Thanks to everyone that gave me so much helpful advice. I will look up every avenue given.

Thanks

We moved here from Mississippi in 2006. At that school they didn't call it dyslexia. They only tested for adhd and they placed him in special education classes with no improvement. When we moved her in 06 he had a battery of test then. Alot of the testing I really can't interpret but this is mostly what is said.

DETERMINATION OF SEVERE DISCREPANCY FOR LEARNING DISABILITY CRITERIA:
The measures used to evaluate intellectual ability and achievement have the same mean and standard deviation, unless otherwise
indicated. His performance on the standardized intelligence test indicates that his assessed intellectual ability is above the range
for mental retardation. He has had appropriate learning experiences in the areas measured by the standardized achievement
tests.
Method I yields a severe discrepancy. Based on the data presented in this report, it appears that the discrepancy between achievement and ability exists to a degree that is not correctable without special education services. The following have been ruled out as the primary cause of the severe discrepancy: visual, hearing, or motor impairment; mental retardation; emotional disturbance; lack of instructional opportunities; or environmental, cultural, or economic disadvantage.
DETERMINATION OF DYSLEXIA
Based on the preponderance of evidence, identification of dyslexia is being made at this time. The following
indicators suggest that he is a student with dyslexia:
Difficulty with phonological awareness
Difficulty accurately decoding nonsense or unfamiliar words
Difficulty with word finding and rapid naming.

That is just a copy of 1 of the pages.

At that time they say he was significantly below average.
Oral Reading Quotient 61 significantly below average.
This school district is having little progress. He is tiring out and giving up.
Just to tell you a little more. I'll write more latter sorry.

There are a number of good LD schools in the Dallas area that specialize in teaching kids with dyslexia. Many use OG as bsmomma suggests.

These schools are expensive, but if you can prove that your child is not making appropriate progress in the public system, you may be able to secure what is known as an OOD placement. This is not an easy thing to do, and you must be well versed in the law to advocate for such a placement.

Help us understand his situation more clearly and maybe we can help. Is he on an IEP? What kind of testing has been done? By whom and when? How do you know he is about 4 years behind? What is the school doing for him now?

These questions and the ones that bwmomma asked will be very helpful to us in tailoring advice.

In the meantime, this discussion has a list of LD schools by state: community.greatschools.net/groups/11554/discussion/152556

It would be helpful if you could provide more information regarding your son's circumstances.
When was he diagnosed? What has his SD done?
What aspects of his dyslexia has remediation been attempted? What are his weaknesses - decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, spelling?

An O-G two year program has been extremely successful in helping to remediate my daughters inability to decode, segment, blending words.

Reading isn't fun when you're working sooo hard just to figure out the words on the page. And after you figure them out you get to figure what the write was saying.
It may also help to get books on tape. He could follow them with the text. But until he gets support for the root cause of his challenge he is burning a lot of BTU's in frustation, disappointment and self esteem.

Look up the Scottish Rite Learning Centers of Texas.
While I know they are in West Texas and Austin I'm not sure what other areas in Texas they are available.
But they may be able to share with you where you can access the help you are seeking in Dallas.
The Masonic Learning Centers on the east coast and mid west require that the child have a proper diagnosis before they consider taking them on for free O-G instruction. I suspect The Rite may have similiar requirements.
Please share some background - there are so many helpful people on this site that can help you to find the support your son needs.

Does he have an IEP at school? What has been tried so far?
