Where do we send our kids to school in Port Saint Lucie??

happymommy
We are cuurently living in PSL, FL & we are unsure of where to send our kids to school, who will be in kindergaten next fall. I am ready to move back up to the North East but w/ the economy so bad & money so tight we are not sure what to do. I want my kids to have a great education but I've heard from several teachers & friends that the schools are ok & the school board is even worse! Should we move back up North or stay here & risk it? Any advice??

Try this link to see if it provides you with some information:

www.stlucie.k12.fl.us/

There is the research and compare feature here at GS:

www.greatschools.net/search/search.page?c=school&q=port%20st.%20lucie&state=FL

Here is a review at School Matters:

www.schoolmatters.com/schools.aspx/q/page=sr/txt=port$sp;St$dot;$sp;Lucie/ust=FL/p=1/fp=1

(You'll have to copy and past School Matters link into address of your browser, as it is not recognizing entire address here)

Finally, here is a review from google of private schools in Port St. Lucie:

www.privateschoolreview.com/county_private_schools/stateid/FL/county/12111

Hope these are helpful.

Hi
Ok, thanks for your help.. I have some major issues about all of this & the gap is narrowing in on where to send them to school. I'm not sure if I'm worrying to much about these things. I grew up in a small town & had a great childhood & FL is a crazy place to raise kids. It's not very peaceful & has more crime than where I came from. I've been here for 15 yrs (minus our brief move to PA) & never became acclimated w/ FL. I'm a dental hygienist, but I'm staying home to raise my kids, but w/ this economy I'm feeling guilty about staying home. But the job situation is horrible for hygienists down here so that's another issue-hahah.. I'm just trying to find a balance between schooling, going back to work & being there for my kids. I don't have a support system down here & if I did that would really help. So that's why I'm torn. Should we stay or go up North near my parents so my children can spend time w/ their grandparents. So many things to be concerned about it's driving me nuts-LOL... Thanks again..

I don't know exactly where the Greatschools poster "dhfl143" is located, but I know she's in FL and very active in education and advocacy issues...Why don't you send her a private message and see if she can tell you more about the school systems? She's a very knowledgeable person, and if she doesn't know the answer, she can probably direct you to someone who does....

Hi
Thanks, yes I have looked into that Greatschool's feature. My one hang up is listening to teachers, friends & family on how terrible the FL public school system is. I am a stay at home mom & sending them to private school really isn't an option. We recently moved back to FL from up North to be closer to family, which are non existent & I really wanted their support. We moved from a great school district down to a so-so one & now I'm worried. The schools here are not zoned they are all a lottery system, you sign up for your top 3 schools & the school board lets you know what school you can take your child to. I just want my children to have a good start & I'm struggling w/ what to do. I don't want to just give it a shot & take a risk w/ my kids. I'm not sure FL was made for education & great employment situations. It's more a vacation & retirement State. This is weighing heavy on my mind. Thanks for the advice..

Have you tried using Greatschool's "Research and Compare" feature? Go to the green menu bar near the top of this page, and then click on the "research and compare" tab, where you'll be able to enter the location and grade level of the schools you're interested in finding out more about...
