After the No Child Left Behind Act, we must remember that while a school has a legal obligation to identify students who need Independent Education Plans or 504 Accommodations, such determinations place burdens on the school in terms of staffing and finances.

School testing may be helpful, but their goal may be to find a "normal" result - which avoids any required staffing or financial committments from the school.

Better to have the school do the testing - they have to do it for free once parents initiate a request [do it in writing by a trackable mail service]. In the request, request not only the school's interpretation of the raw data, but the raw data itself. That is your right as a parent/guardian.

Then, bring the raw data to an appropriate specialist of your own choice. Your pediatrician can probably make a recommendation to the appropriate specialist in your area.

The first thing that comes to mind to me is Autism, have him/her checked by the school Speech Therapist, and School Psychologist. Just to be on the safe side make an appointment with your Pediatrician as well. Talk with Grandparents has detailed questions as to what happend on vacation.

Sometimes it can be something on the Autism Spectrum disorder list. It would be good to seek out a doctor that can diagnose this. If this is the issiue than I would get help from a Regional center if you live in California. If not then ask your doctor who provides services to help your child with these disorders.
I hope this helps and I wish you all the best.

I agree that children tend to stop speaking because of either a medical reason or a traumatic event.

I also think that speaking with your pediatrician and a child psychologist is urgently required.

However, I do not think that questioning the grandparents about the event is necessarily a good idea at the moment until you have consulted with both doctors and gotten their opinions on how you might proceed on that. You don't want to put them on the defensive.

I wish you all the very best. My heart goes out to you.

you child maybe is being bullied at school or maybe kids are making fun or him for some reason. its terrible but it does happen. talk to his teacher maybe she can give you some insight. it could be that your child has hearing problems and cant talk because he cant hear.
