Lemonade stands, dogsitting, babysitting, burger flipping. Does your child have a summer job?

lisaedit
Summer jobs teach kids responsibility. But sometimes it takes creativity to find these jobs, especially in a down-economy. We've got some tips for you here: www.greatschools.net/cgi-bin/showarticle/536. But what ways has your child found the best for locating summer jobs? And what skills have they learned through a summer job?

My nine year old son pet-sits and poop scoops for pet owners in the neighborhood. He has had his business for over a year now. We opened him a savings account and he enjoys watching his balance grow. He is allowed to keep a percentage of his earnings to spend as he chooses. It's a great way to teach responsibility and sound saving practices.

My son works in fast food. He is a really work oriented kid and I am very proud of him. He just went from place to place applying for jobs and then he would call them or show up introducing himself. His current employer was really impressed.

My son took an unpaid internship for the spring semester of his senior year in high school. Based on his work habits, they offered him a paid position for the summer with significantly more hours well above minimum wage.

There was no way to know that they would be able to offer him the job, but the office skills and recommendations he's been able to take advantage of have been very helpful.

My teen went to an on-line site that he'd heard about for locating summer jobs and applied. (Sites such as www.fastweb.com sometimes list local opportunities for students age 16 & up.) I gave more background about his experience/what he's learned in this previous discussion: community.greatschools.net/q-and-a/159439/At-what-age-do-you-think-a-child-should-get-her-first-job?cpage=3#comment_182082
