Do your kids' diets take a nose dive during the summer? How do you keep them eating right?

lisaedit
It' s so easy to get lax about set meal times and what your kids eat during the summer. Got any great ideas for sticking to a healthy diet during the lazy days of summer and when you are on the road?

I totally agree! Summer is much better for my boys (11 & 10) during the summer. I always keep fresh fruits and veggies on hand for snacking and I get to control all three meals. I have no idea what my boys are leaving on their plate or swapping at school. I love to cook so eating out has never been big to us so therefore, the boys love the variety of foods I have introduced over the years instead of demanding chicken nuggets and french fries every night! lol

One thing I do in the summer that my girls love is freeze grapes and other fruits. They love it. It keeps them from wanting to grab popsicles constantly and if we have a hectic weekend where we eat out I know they have at least snacked healthy. They also love to freeze their yogurts...no longer in the yuck food category.

They say it's better for people to eat smaller portions more frequently throughout the day, and so if anything, I think my son's diet is better over the summer. During the school year, he eats a hearty breakfast, but is constrained by a limited lunch period, and he comes home from school "starving" and then tends to grab the first thing he sees in the 'fridge.
During summer, we love the variety of fresh fruit and veggies that are available, and at any given time, when he's hungry, my son grabs that for a snack. Sometimes it will be a cup of yogurt with fresh berries, or a bowl of cereal with a banana at 3:00 p.m. Did you know you can freeze grapes and eat a handful of them on a hot summer day in place of ice cream? We keep granola bars and nacho chips with salsa and a limited amount of "sweets" on hand, too, but to us, it's EASIER to eat a healthy diet in summer.

hahahah...I laugh because my son (going into 6th) is a snacker!
So here is what I do: he has to have a decent breakfast with Protein (EGGs, etc..) then at 10am ish - he has baby carrots (i pre-bag them for him and keep them in the fridge) at Lunch he as a full lunch (as I would pack for school) then at 3pm he has an Apple/Orange/Melon/etc.... dinner at 5 sharp seems to really work then he has BEFORE 8 2 oreo's and a glass of milk.

I know that sounds really rigid, but he is satisfied all day and doesn't contually ASK to eat or overeat.

My daughter is different - she's 14 and I have tell her to eat!!! and when she DOES eat, eat something besides carbs!
