How do you enroll in one district but live in another/

RachelPA
I am uneasy about the district I live in once my child leaves the elementary grades - 6th. I am wondering if anyone knows how to enroll in another district while residing in another?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think you can, well you can but you will have to pay unless you stay in your district. It depends where you live. you just can't put your kid in any school you want. We would all love that.....

has anyone tried this in missouri? i live 500 feet from a district that would put my son in remedial for reading and gifted for math. i took his evals and such there- they have actually seen his paperwork! the answer i was given was "sure, we do this all the time". right now they go to schools 9 and 13 mi from home ( it really bugs me when they could walk to school in the 1st district- i went there because when i bought the house the owner told me THAT was district for our house- yeah, whole other story there- still got to send them school in the mean time though)and when i asked these same questions at registration for THIS district i was looked at like i had two heads? any thoughts- bring em on!!

I don't know what state you live in, but in Maine you need to contact the Superintendent of each school to get permission. I think that you need the response from where you actually live first. You need to tell them the reason and if they approve it then you are golden. It all comes down to money...the district that you leave loses the state money for you and where you go gains it.

I hope that helps. Good luck.

Every school district/state is different. Some have provisions for parents who work in a different district than they live in, to attend a school near their job. Others have "magnet" schools, or "charter schools" or "vouchers" that can be used to attend in a location other than their home public school. The best advice I can give you is to first go to your state's Board of Education website, and see if they address school choice options. Also, check your district website.
