Hi Ladeetz - I recommend you connect with two important allys for special needs kids who live in the Dayton City District - especially if your son has an IEP.
Email Patricia.Gay@mcesc.org or at 236-9965 - she can help you be an advocate in the system until you are happy with the outcomes for your child. Jenny Smith who works for DPS as the Special Ed Director can be reached at 542-3435.
You can also ask the DPS student assignment office which schools might be best equipped to serve your child. They would know I expect.
The other thing to think about is the other things you want your child to get out of their education - any public school (public district or public charter) has to by law (IDEA law in Ohio) serve your child. However, I know that some kids with specific learning issues like hearing impairment prefer to be in a class with other kids who sign or are also hearing impaired so they can have better social connections. I'd ask "where are other kids like my son being served?" And then visit those schools before deciding.
