You can do a little of both. What I usually do is mix in a little fun with chores or work that my son needed help with during school.....reading and focusing. So I tell him after we do what we need to do around the house we will do something fun. So of course the tasks get done alot quicker and while your out having fun use the activity as a learning experience too.
Look for your local Paint Your Own Pottery Studio. They usually have summer camp and they offer great projects that the kids love and you have something valuable after your child is done.
I'm on the wrong side of the hill to be of much help, but you might want to check out wpef.org and talk to foundation director Kelly Kane. She's very involved in the Westchester/Playa Del Rey area and she might be able to let you know what's available on that side of the hill.
