We're moving to Virginia Beach. When buying a house should I consider elementary, middle or high schools. My children will be going into 2nd grade.
Thank you!
We lived in Virginia Beach a few years ago so we have an idea of the area, although it might have changed since then. We have thought about renting, but I'm reluctant to put the kids into a school and then move them to another if we decide to buy in a different area.
Food for thought though - thank you!
Ideally you'll want to find a house in a district with a good feeder system: great elementary that feeds into a fantastic junior high, and finally a wonderful high school. However, that's not alway possible. And while you'll be looking at current elementaries, the junior highs will undergo quite a bit of change in 4 years, and the high schools might be totally different in 7 years--with different administrators, different boundaries, you name it.
While you say you're buying, had you given any thought to renting for the short term until you get a feel for the area and the neighborhoods you'll be moving to? It'll definitely increase the likelihood of getting the schools right. Given the housing market's volatility right now, you might be wise to "try-on" a neighborhood, since the market might not appreciate enough to change districts 2-3 times in the next few years.
