How would you rate yourself as a parent?

eccentric
We rate teachers all the time...good teacher vs bad, stale and disciplined vs nurturing! Somebody in the greatschool community rated herself as an "awsome" parent. What really makes a parent as awsome? How can we rate ourselves? We do the best we can to raise our children and we all have a certain philosophy on parenting. But can we really rate ourselves as great parents when clearly many parents maynot be as great as they think they are?!

The best way is to talk to the teachers that are teaching math at your daughters school. I started helping my daughter with math and reading and noticed that they were teaching them differently and it was confusing my daughter with how I was teaching her in the evenings. Sometimes showing them different ways is good, but sometimes it just confuses them.

Concerning math, check out The Standard Deviants DVDs, they are great! Very informative, short and to the point. Even my 4 yr old gets a kick out of them!

We really have to look at our children to find that answer! After they are out of our house, and on thier own, that is when it will show! Our 20 yr old is a volunteer firefighter, works full-time and is going to college. Our younger home-schooled kids; 11 yr old going into 8th grade, 6 yr old going into 2nd grade, 4 yr old starting Kindergarten, 2 yr old potty-training and we also have a 6 month old. All I can do is look to the Lord and do the best I can at this moment. But I can say the most important ingredient is JOY! You win your childs heart with joy, and the rest is easy!

I think I am a great parent. Education is a priority n my list. My three girls read at least 20 minutes a day. They do their homework as soon as they get home from school. They are involved in activities, both in school and out of school. I adopted my girls about 3 years ago. They were very low in math, reading, writing, etc. Now they are all doing A&B work mostly A's in each subject) and the youngest is doing 3rd grade work in the second grade. I had a problem with them learning study skills, but now they all like going to school. The oldest was the biggest problem, but now she loves school and doing well.

Does anyone have any ideas as to something that could help me, especially in math. I had algebra, but it's been a long time. Some things have come back to me and some haven't. I help the girls as much as I can. I talked to the oldest girls going in Middle school about how the study habits, classes, etc. is different in middle school. I think I am steering them all right.

That is a great question that we must all think about on a daily basis as parents. We are not perfect and have not been given a handbook or guide on parenting, so we must be easy on ourselves, but in the meantime truly think about how we can and must improve for the futures of our children. I have asked my daughter, age 9, and will ask her again how I am doing. She is sweet in her responses and I know that she could be a bot more honest. My 4 year old son reminds me not to raise my voice above the others and I will still be heard. Love his christian based school! Parenting is keeping is simple, loving our children, and teaching them right from wrong while we, as parents, are prcaticing what we preach!
