I'm not sure what issue you're facing, but I always make sure my son lets his coach know that his focus is on school. He has chosen a Division III school where scholarships are academic only, but he's attending a school where he won't be forced to give up his sport, either.
Since it's so unlikely that most kids will ever get a multi-million dollar contract to pitch in the majors, it's definitely important to balance. Any coach that wanted too much time would get a visit from me. On the other hand, if a special event prevented my son from finishing his homework, I'd write the teacher in question.
