Hi Aparna121212
Welcome to the United States I hope your stay is joyful.
Your daughter would be entering kindergarden, you would need proof of address, income, her birth certificate, I think you will need to supply your ID. When my daughter registered her son she had to bring her lease on her apartment. So wherever you will be living; check the schools in the area talk with the principals. If you could talk with some of the parents with young children to get an idea of school system.
I hope this was helpful.
Again welcome!!!!!!

Greataschools also has a group just for parents of kindergarteners, which you might want to join: community.greatschools.net/groups/11535

Typically a 5 year-old child is a kindergarten student in the United States. However, if your daughter will be turning six on or before Sept 1st, she would enter the 1st grade for the upcoming 2008/2009 school year. When is your daughter's birthday?

Sept 1st is the cut off for most states including Illinois; a few states have Dec 31 cut off date for each grade along with a few that allow local educational boards who choose a date specific to their region.

I hope you have a happy, safe, and pleasant journey here and I welcome you and your family to our country! Where are you moving from?

There is a very basic US book series that I believe is called "What your kindergartener should know" that has each grade level in the series. It might help you know how our system or expectations differ from your homeland. Truthfully and sadly, the bar is low comparatively to most affluent countries. At the same time, there are many terrific teachers and schools all across the country that try their best to raise that very bar.

Good luck to you and your daughter!

A child who is 5 years old will be entering kindergarten, and will need proof of residency and current medical records to enroll. There are not academic prerequisites.
Are you talking about living within the Chicago City limits or just near the city, in order to have a reasonable commute to work?
The "city," including suburban areas, stretches more than an hour's drive from north to south, east to west....and cost of apartments/availablility vary tremendously. The City of Chicago has a magnet school program, but neighborhood schools are not all of the same high quality...Click on the "Research and Compare" on the green menu bar near the top of this page to find out more about specific schools.
Here's a recent discussion thread where another poster asked about moving to Chicago, and the responses and resources listed there might be helpful to you: community.greatschools.net/q-and-a/169992/Hi-Everyone-We-are-relocating-from-the-UK-and-need-advice-on-neighbourhoods-and-schools-in-chicago-Anyone?cpage=1#
