Special Ed Southern California

Anonymous
My company has offered me a position in southern California (Irvine Office). I have a child in K Level special ed in CT. he is mainstreamed and has a psychologist in the class room all day every day> He has mild autism, ADHD and is socially challenged> however he is very intelligent and good academically> Are there any schools in the southern CA area that would provide the same as CT_ ie mainstream, in school full time psychologist and other support? How easy is it to get into the school and how would we go about having him register. he will be in 1st grade next year> Does anyone have similar challenges with their child? and what will CA provide>

Hi, I currently live in Southern California about 30 minutes away from Irvine in Eastvale which is a smaller community within Corona. My family is actually re-locating to Summerville, SC in approximately 3 weeks. I have 3 children two of which have been in the public school system resource programs as well as private. In comparison I felt that the public school system was actually more attentive to my childs learning and behavior issues. I ended up sticking with Public schools and feel very fortunate for the resource programs available for my children. My oldest is now 20 and in the Navy, My next is going to be entering into Highschool this coming school year in Summerville. My baby is six and he will be attending elementary school there as well. I faced my struggles with my 14 yr old since she started K. After pulling my hair out, visits to numerous specialists, psycologists, seminars on ADHD, OCD, etc. I learned about a disease called Pandas which I feel saved my daughters life. She suffered with depression because she couldn't get good grades, behavior outbursts, low self esteem, etc. This disease was founded by Dr. Robert Lynch of San Diego, CA (1hr 30 min from Irvine). I began speaking with moms in 26 other states and 95% of them had the same success I did. NO MORE ADHD, OCD, Autism, ETC. ! Attached is an article on it. This disease is not really known yet but I have been working agressivly to inform school districts about it. Pandas can begin simply from ear or throat infections as well as other viruses where bacteria lives in the childs tonsils and transfers to the brain cause an imbalance of chemicals that litteraly can change everything about your child so quickly you feel like they have been kidknapped and your left with a child in dispair. After six years of suffering she had her tonsils removed which stop the bacteria from transfering and immediately the day after surgery my daughters speach, writing, attention span, behaviors were forever changed again and I had my child back. My husband and I were in amazement! There is a doctor in Long Beach Dr. Kraemer of Pioneer Medical Group (approx 30 min. from Irvine) that is very familiar with Pandas and did the surgery on her to remove the tonsils about 3 years ago. My daughter's grade went to straight A's withing 6 months, she is now in various clubs (Drama - Speech & Debate - Yearbook Staff)which I never thougt was possible and more importantly HAPPY with who she is. From the day of the surgery she has never had to take a medication again. I wish you the best of luck in your move to sunny CA. Great school districts in CA are Irvine, Saddleback, Capistrano, Norco/Corona. All are 30 minutes from Irvine. CA public schools may not offer much.....and recently with the CA Education budget crisis, there are schools being closed and teachers who will get layed off, becuz of cuts. Class size is also increasing......for example Los Angeles Unified school district will hire basically a non-credential teacher with an emergency Special ed credential with the hopes that they stay in the field and finish the credential so that they have a SP ED TEACHER. Because of the NCLB teachers with no credentials are not being hired, but they will give a new teacher an emergency credential to teach special ed, and may not even have the experience in a Special Ed class.

I'd like to suggest that you copy/paste your message in two other places, to get better visibility from parents who are located in So. Cal, and have children who receive special ed services.
One place is Greatschools Learning and Attention Difficulties Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554 and the other is www.millermom.proboards107.com

I had a friend who used to live in Irvine, and her son was dyslexic, and she was not exactly overjoyed with the public schools. There's a private LD school, Prentice, which may or may not be appropriate for your son, but rather than take my advice, wait and see what response you get from some of the moms who actually live in the area now, by posting in those other groups...
