How can I find out beside good grades, what other requirements the top 10 colleges impose for admission?

I have heard getting to colleges like Harvard University, just having A’s not enough.
They look at many other aspects to admit students. What are they looking for? IS having connection really a big aspect? We like to start getting my son prepare for one of the
Best education system within a great university. Has anyone researched that?
I appreciate your recommendation and assistance.

Thanks MagnetMom.

I went to school in USA - it was an error when I send college - I meant HS.

Mandanav, I just realized that you may be confused about the U.S. education system... You mentioned in your response to Magnet Mom that "My son is in 6th grade.....thought now is about time to kind of decide what we need to put our focus - not to lose our precious time...since in two years he will be in college."

NO, after 8th grade in the U.S. children enter High School, which covers grades 9-12, and THEN they may chose to enter college. There are public high schools that have to accept anyone who lives in a particular district, and there are private high schools that may have an application process, but none of those are colleges.

hi manadav,

I found a pretty good website with all sorts of answers to questions. It's located at wiki.answers.com/Q/FAQ/1767

Keep in mind that the questions are answered by regular people, so take the answers with a grain of salt. That said, since many people seem to say similar things, you can get an idea of what the schools are looking for.

In addition, try CollegeConfidential.com since many of the parents and kids that post there have already been accepted or denied, and you can begin to get an idea of what is likely to get in.

Finally to answer the "what is an ivy question" I turned to Wikipedia. It officially refers to the 8 schools in the same athletic conference, but now it refers to their academics as well. They include Brown, Dartmouth, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale. Lately, the term "West Coast Ivies" has been applied to schools like Stanford and the Claremont Colleges.

Hello MagnetMom,

I just joined this site - it's great to know there are so many people care for education of our children.

Thank you for taking the time to answer.
I'm not sure about what Ivy is!

My son is a 6th grader. This came to my mind to communicate with other parents, because my son has tried 4-5 different sport activities so far - and it seems he has not find his real interest yet. He is a bright kid and I don't like to force anything to him. But again summer is around the corner and I need to make sure he continue to get good in some sport or something - talking to some one universities they all say good academic and being good in one interest ..can be sport, writing, etc. thought now is about time to kind of decide what we need to put our focus - not to lose our precious time...since in two years he will be in college.

We used to live in orange county, CA they have some good k-12 there too.

Take care well....
