North east side of town most expensive. northwest side of town real good but not that expensive yet.
got specific questions, will help narrow it down, too much to give a good answer.

We have also decided the Northside is what's best for our children.

I am moving to San Antonio myself in a few months; I have been on the internet researching schools. Now this is my opinion; if you have a school with lots of parental involvement you are more likely to be in a good area. Also look at the testing scores this will give you a small insight to there academics in the school. I feel if you can see that they are exceeding the state requirements, that is a sign that the teachers might be doing there job. also go on to the city web page and look at what the city is doing. You can also look up the crime statistics for that area; this will give you a better idea if this is a bad place. I don't like the big city living so I am looking at out lining areas. I have found that I am favorably impressed with the areas just north of San Antonio and some areas north east of town I don't like the area south of town they have low test scores and higher crime. Don't know if this helped or not as I haven't lived there; but I am investigating the area so when I move there I will have it narrowed down.
