What do they teach elementary children (Curriculum)

futureteacher
Hello,
I'm hoping someone can tell me what children are being taught in elementary school . Is it strictly math, reading and writing? Do they offer art, music, PE? It doesn't matter what state you're in, I need a generalization. I can't find any solid information anywhere. I appreciate any help.

Each school district has different parameters. Contact the school district in which you are thinking of sending your child to. They should be able to provide you with essential learning outcomes in math, reading, writing, science, and social studies. These outcomes should be aligned with their state standards. As for Art, PE, and music, some districts offer them, some do not, due to budget constraints.

Here in SoCal, there is a strong emphasis on math and reading/writing, but there are state standards that require teaching all subjects you've listed and more. You can see the state standards by visiting www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/

I notice from your name that you're a future teacher. Unfortunately, it really DOES matter what state you're in, because the State's Board of Education dictates curriculum standards and goals for each grade level. I live in IL, and here's a link to my state's site, which does give solid info: www.isbe.state.il.us/curriculum/Default.htm
They do address things like fine arts and physical education, not just math and english. Hope this helps.
