Mommy with 5 yr old looking into homeschooling. need advice

yaya83
Hiya I just moved from the bay area, CA to Chandler, AZ 4 wks ago. My daughter is in Kindergarten. Turns out she is very behind in all subjects; I need to catch her up to the standards here and she is having lots of troubles... i have looked into homeschooling where i could giver her a lot of 1:1 teaching. ANy advice from a mommy that has tried homeschooling? Do you think this might help her? I don't want her to start the 1st grade only to set her up to fail. She is already frustrated with all the school work they are expecting from her.

please help

I am a homeschooling parent and also working for a private independent study school. If she is behind and you put her into a regular classroom, she may slip through the cracks. If you give her the 1:1 time she needs it will benefit her for the rest of her life. Her self-esteem can be greatly affected by her frustration or inability to do the work required. Homeschooling is truly a joy for me when I see the progress my kids have made and I know that I will never regret or get that time back with them. The school my children attend individualizes for the needs of each student. Parkridge Private School- (562)424-5528

I would suggest checking into a charter school. It gives you the flexibility to work on her weak areas, but it also provides help for you so that you don't feel totally lost. I did this with my son and it was the best choice I ever made!

Homeschooling has its ups and downs. You might try just supplementing the information that has already been introduced in your daughter's classroom. This will give your daughter the experience of an educational setting, as well as being able to work 1 on 1 with her. Ask the teacher exactly what she thinks would help your daughter, and ask for resources as well so you can practice at home.

I was homeschooled for most of my elementary years and when I rejoined in a private school in the 7th grade I was at the top of my class. We did not have a strict routine / curriculum that we used or followed every day but the books we did use were the A Becka books www.abeka.com/ and they were great! One thing we did not have (which I think helped out immensely) is a television. I spent alot of my time reading all kinds of books. Even in the kindergarten level they can read and the more you read to them the more they will be used to it. Get a phonics book as well since phonics is the foundation for reading. And when getting them books to read for themselves get books that are at their level and a few that are just below there level for confidence boosting. If a kid struggles to read each word they will not comprehend much and will dislike reading. At that age practicing letters and numbers is a great exercise as well.

Are you looking at homeschooling for the upcoming year, or just as a summer tutoring program? I'm wondering whether your daughter might be having troubles due to not having been "exposed" to the more advanced curriculum in the new school, or if she was having difficulties even in her old school? Is she one of the youngest in her class? While I don't normally advocate repeating the same grade in the same school, it sounds like your daughter might benefit from repeating kindergarten in your new area.
