So your child will be 7 this December? In Nebraska (at least where I live) kids are in kindergarten from 5-6 yrs old and first grade 6-7 years old. So according to his age (6 now 7 next month) he should be in first grade this year. (Actually, by law, you don't HAVE TO enroll your kids in school until they are 7, but that's another subject.) Maybe they want to hold him back because his problems reading and writing in English? That would be a hard adjustment. Maybe they are doing what they think is best. Call and schedule a meeting with the principal and discuss your concerns with her. Good luck!

Each state has set age standards in which they have to follow, partly to keep class sizes down to where they need to be and partly they need to ensure the child is where they need to be. PROBABLY no school here in Omaha will make an exeption without additional testing (which you will have to pay for) and for the fact that his English is lacking they probably feel it is for the best while he re-adjusts to a new school and culture. Our schools usually only want whats best for that individual child.
