Probably nothing in terms of changing his placement -- different countries -- different rules. Was the kinder placement based solely on age or a combo of age and readiness for first grade?

What are they doing to improve his English? If they have identified this as a problem, I would be requesting intervention.

Since it is now spring, I would not try to have him moved up to 1st grade now, and promoted to 2nd grade in the fall. As a 6 year old, now completing Kindergarten, this is the correct placement for him in an American School.

In America many parents would not have started their 5 year old son in Kidergarten last fall, but are choosing to wait until they are 6 to start Kindergarten. As a result, the have an additional year of maturity to do well from K through Grade 12.

I would be seriously considering having him repeat Kindergarten if he was my child; this would give him a year to focus on his English skills without having to learn concepts about a language he has not mastered.

It certainly is not a "shameful thing" for him to repeat Kindergarten. I would discuss the situation with the Kindergarten teacher and principal and determine what special services they will be offering him in English as a second language.

I believe if you let him master language before going on to 1st grade, he will have a much better success in school, and not struggle to keep up.

Keep us posted.

Advise them that you need them to give the test in spanish. also, summer is coming up. another thing you could do is over the summer 'homeschool him' (i've been doing it for 3+ years now) and then have the school test him at fall) there is a good chance he could skip a grade, just by doing that. ;) doesn't take much to keep up with those schools, let alone get ahead!
