I did not mean Detroit suburb as just "Detroit". I was rather looking into schools in Ann Arbor, Novi, Bloomfield Hills etc.
Since "International Academy" is a public school, anyone in that school district can attend? Do you need to apply specially to go to that school? Does the school name "Internation" come from any particular reason? you know? Which middle school students go to International Academy?
We are also concidering private schools, but can not decide which is better..send him to a nice private school or live in a good school district and send him to a public school.....
International Academy, like sabskhan mentions, is a great high school in Bloomfield Hills. There's also a K-8 school in Farmington Hills called the International School (www.greatschools.net/cgi-bin/mi/private/4403).
In terms of areas to live, Metro Detroit offers a lot of diversity, especially in Southfield, Farmington Hills, Royal Oak and Berkley. Here's a good jumping-off point for city research:
I DID interpret the question to be about the City of Detroit, and not the surrounding area. I have visited Detroit. I read an article just this morning about graduation rates of high school students in the 50 largest U.S. Cities, and Detroit is LAST, with LESS than 25% of the students getting a diploma. The article does make it clear that suburban areas differ from their adjacent metropolitan areas, but if a family is coming from another country, and is not familiar with a city, they need to be aware. www.usatoday.com/news/education/2008-04-01-cities-suburbs-graduation_N.htm#table
I would like to know what "International environment" means. I have lived and studied in many countries and finally settled in a beautiful Detroit suburb. I don't think the question was only the city of Detroit! Detroit has wonderful suburbs with an international flair and students from around the world. We have many Asians, South-East Asians, Labanese, Greeks, and Eastern Europeans. High school at Bloomfield Hills called "International Academy" was rated one on of the 100 best schools in the US, and has a diverse student body.
Healthy11, if you are not from Metro Detroit, how can you have such a strong opinion? Some of the best Private schools like Detroit Country Day and Cranbrook Academy are also good choices if you are willing to dish out $20,000-25,000 a year. I can't sit here and tell you how schools in your area would be like unless my children have been to some of those schools. I feel strong judgements like you just made is un-called for and can be seriously misleading!
