Has he ever used any augmentive devices? This might be a good platform for him and possibly expand into words at some point.
Does he communicate at all in school?

Yes, there have been previous www.Schwablearning.org discussions involving selective mutism...Here's one previous Schwab thread, that at least gives some additonal info/resources: www.schwablearning.org/message_boards/view_discussion.aspx?thread=14994

I think my search came up with 17 previous discussions, but I'm sorry I don't have time to copy/paste each of the URL's... Here's how you can search the archives over at www.Schwablearning.org: To use them, go to the main site, and on the right side near the top you'll see a green area with some menu choices...Roll your cursor over "Connecting with Others" and then you'll see a choice of "Parent to Parent Message Board." Click on that, and towards the center of the page you'll see a green rectangular box below "before you begin" - The green box says "Search All Discussions for (type in keywords)" and there you can enter whatever words or terms you're interested in, like "selective mutism," then do an Advanced Search for all words....
Keep these instructions handy for whatever topics you'd like to look up..."apraxia" or "autism resources" etc. I hope this helps.

2 other good groups are:

Schwabbies (Previous members of Schwablearning Message Board & they know their stuff)

You could post in Q & A, as well as the other 2 groups. You can keep track of answers by selecting to watch or by viewing your own recent activity in "My dashboard."
