Moving to Las Vegas

jrali1
We`re moving to Las Vegas and we`re looking for a very good elementary/public school in northwest/west/north Las Vegas. My son is in 3rd grade (we are stationed Overseas). I heard about Obrien school. We did not buy a house yet, because we want first to choose a good elem. school and then look around. Any suggestion and advice is greatly apprciated, thank you, Alex

Are you looking for private or public school? I only have experience with private schools, but have had 3 kids in school for a period of over 20 years (oldest son is now 28 years old!). I can tell you that if you find a public school that is in one of the many 'new' neighborhoods, that school is going to be 'good'. Stay away from older schools, they are sometimes in 'questionable' neighborhoods. As far as private schools if that is what you are looking for, Centennial Academy, Merryhill Schools, The Meadows, are all good. Some parchial schools are good too, and cheaper, but the smaller ones lack a lot of services, so you need to do research on those.

I don't live in Las Vegas but we do visit regularly since we have family who live there. You might want to check out Summerland -- which isn't technically Las Vegas but it's the one of the suburban areas next to Las Vegas.

Since your post mentions that you haven't yet purchased a home, if you are working with a real estate agent, enlist their help. They will be delighted to email this kind of information to you because this is exactly the kind of stuff they use to sell homes.

Keep us updated, what school you selected and how its going.

Hi. Did you try to see what schools are in the Las Vegas area, by clicking on the "Research and Compare" tab on the green menu bar near the top of this page, then entering the location and level (elementary), and when you see the names of individual schools pop up, you can click on them for more details? Once you have the names of specific schools, you might also check www.ratemyteachers.com to see what kind of instructors the school has, and if you see teachers listed with favorable ratings, its's probably a good sign.
