My 9th grade son, who goes to a Christian school, was sent a cartoon pornography picture from a friend to his cell phone. He showed the picture to others at his school and now he has been suspended for 2 days.
How do you choose type of punishment to impose?

Are you asking what YOU should do? Was the suspension enough? IMO, yes, it was. Of course, you do want to talk to your son about respecting women, and how Pornography hurts everyone who comes in contact with it.
But, he wasn't the one who sent the message, he was the recipient. I think most 9th grade boys would be hard pressed to NOT share that with a few friends.
Shame and guilt are not the right strategies here, though. Talk to him about how did he think the girl (I assume it was a girl?) in the photo felt. Ask him if it was his sister or mother, how would it make him feel? Ask him if maybe she was forced by someone to do it, and how terrible she must have felt to do that. You can let him know that virtually ALL women involved in the Sex Trade have been or are currently being sexually abused. Usually by people they have no control over, but who have control over them. Ask him to think about the girl, and since it is a Christian School, maybe pray for her.
The school took care of it. I would talk to him about how you feel about the cartoon and instill your vaules about it. Sometimes you get more with words of wisdom
