looking into Cary and Charlotte, NC

Anonymous
Any suggestions? Heard Cary has a lot of redistricting and bussing. Heard a lot of kids in Charlotte go to private school, however, the public schools have high ratings. Would love to hear some opinions or any information you can share would be helpful. Thanks

My family and I (total of six, not including the dogs and cat) have been looking into relocating to North Carolina from the Bronx, New York; specifically Wake County (Cary, Clayton, Wake Forest to name a few). I am a UPS driver of 14 years who is leaving for a better environment for my family. We are looking into an area which posses a great educational environment. We felt Cary had those qualities; not only of education but of a family community we can feel comfortable in, strive in, feel at peace in. I would like someone who lives in and has experience in (from a parental standpoint) that indeed Cary is strong in education. This is extremely important for us because we are uprooting our family for a totally new environment. I'm doing it because I feel it is in the best interest of our family. Question: Is Cary as good as it claims to be in environment which includes community and education? I would like to open some dialogue on the matter so please, feel free to express so we can get an insiders point of view. My family and I thank you....

Many children in Charlotte, as I understand, are in private schools because Charlotte once had forced bussing and there was a mass exodus out of the public school system. Around 1999 a law suit was brought against Mecklenberg County Schools to stop bussing and as I recall, the school district lost the battle to force bussing on it's population. I think since then the schools have revitalized and serve the local neighborhoods surrounding the schools. You may want to do some research about this 30 + year struggle to end forced bussing in Charlotte/Mecklenberg County schools.

I've lived in Cary since 1968. My husband and I graduated from school here - and our 25 year old graduated from school - and our daughter (who is 13) is currently in Wake County Schools. We have a TON parental involvement in the schools. We have had a good bit of reassignment - but the new schools and the children who have been moved - for the most part have settled down and done well. I personally look for a community that is involved and passionate about their children. This is that kind of community. I hope that helps.

I have a friend on another on-line board who is from the area you're looking at - I'll ask her and get back to you as soon as I find out.
