Overseas move from DODDS to public school. Please help us select the best school not far from Ft. Lewis.

We are lucky to have our 1 12 year old son Honor student and want the best for him. Being overseas is fun but not easy and the move is harder to the States because there is no crime (to speak of) in Bavaria. We will buy a home when we find the best school so we need all of your help soon since we move in about 2 months. I want good teachers that don't yell (because they will have problems then from momma!) and a school that has physical education, art and music (so the children can give their brain a break!). I have heard University Place is the best but want to hear from the experts out there. Thanx!

In Tucson it would be University High (public but requires special admittance, or BASIS (a charter school). Do not attempt private schools in Tucson, they are not good environments and are very cliquish.

Greatschools is a nationwide community, but there may not be many individuals who participate here that are familiar with a particular school. Have you asked people at the FT. Lewis school liasion office: www.lewis.army.mil/dpca/fsd/schl/index.htm

Once you have names of specific schools, you can plug them into Greatschools "compare/ratings" section, and get an idea of how the students perform on national testing, etc. as well as check the individual school websites to see what kind of classes and extracurriculars (sports, etc.) are offered. I doubt anyone can tell you about teachers who yell versus not, because most schools have a whole gamut of individuals, with different teaching styles, and some schools probably will be doing hiring of new teachers due to retirements, leaves, etc. so they don't even know who all of next year's teachers will be, much less who your son might have...
