Does anyone know of an excellent school in the SUSD for a 5 year old child?

areyes
My soon attended a SUSD school this year for about 2 months in kindergarten but I removed him due to concerning safety issues. Can anyone give me any advice in looking for a great school in the SUSD for a 1st grader. Private schooling is VERY expensive & quite honestly can be disenchanting.

I cannot say enough good things about Sonoran Sky. We transferred there from a suposedly premiere North Scottsdale elementary school, and Sonoran Sky has been a breath of fresh air - great academics, zero tolerance for bullying and an active "social development" program, great teachers and welcoming parents. My kids are finally learning in a safe environment (most SUSD and PVUSD schools teach very little, disregard differentiation and tolerate bullying -- Sonoran Sky is a gem in each of these areas). The school is open enrollment, so you might be able to get in. Take a tour or talk to more parents -- Sonoran Sky will give you a first-rate education at a public school price.

Sonoran Sky is in Scottsdale but is part of the Paradise Valley District. It has open enrollment. It's an excellent school.

Hi,
I hope I post this right but where I live, you can't just pick any school. We are assigned a school according to where we live. If we want to attend a certain school that is not our neighboorhood school then we have to wait for "open enrollment". And that is once a year. We have to apply for the school we would like to enroll at the main office then come to the school's "open house" that is offered just once. In most cases the school holds a lottery. They also give more points to the families that already have a sibling attending or to families already living in the neighboorhood but was denied enrollment because the school was full. In that case, you may be able to be put on a waiting list.
Also, if we have a good reason we can apply for what is called an "intercity district pass".
Call the school district main office. Hopefully you will talk to someone that will be very helpful to you.

I don't mean to pry, but exactly what safety concerns do you have? With students riding the bus to/from school? With less supervised times on the grounds, like lunch and recess? With a particular child who bullied yours, and a school administrator who didn't respond the way you hoped? It's going to be difficult to know what advice to give you, since we don't know what you're looking for in the way of a "match."

I've been to Scottsdale, but I'm afraid I don't know much about individual schools. My general suggestion would be to talk with other parents. Maybe you can look at your district's website or newsletter and see when various PTA meetings are held, and then you can try to attend those meetings at different schools you're considering, and get answers directly from other parents to your questions.
(P.S. I don't know if SUSD is like my district, but if a child attends a school that's not their "home" school, parents have to arrange for transportation on their own. You need to ask what the policy is in your area.)

I am sorry I am new to this site. It is in Scottsdale, AZ. Scottsdale is one of the more upscale locations in the Phoenix metropolitan area yet I'm having difficulty finding the right match...any advice?

Hi,
A little more info would be helpful but finding school district specific answers might be hard at this point as we are a nationwide community. You can click on the green "research and compare" button up above and do a search for schools in your district there.

Greatschools in a nationwide organization. You don't mention what town and state SUSD is located in, so it is virtually impossible to answer your question. You might try asking other parents in your area what they've heard about local schools.
