I am moving from England to Statesboro, GA in July - has anyone any tips or advice on good schools?

Isabellasmom
My children are 5 and 4 years old and will therefore be K5 and K4 age. I am beginning to realize that Kindergarten places are quite hard to come by - can anyone verify this?
Schools I am looking at are Nevills, Brooklet and I really like the look of Bulloch Academy.

Hello. I'm not from Georgia, so I can't give you information about specific schools, but I thought it might help to get more information about your child...How old are they/what grade level?

I have a good friend in the U.K. and I know the terminology (for example, High school) means different things than in the U.S. (here it's usually considered grades 9-12) and that there are important exams given at different times... Will your move to the U.S. be temporary, or do you expect to be here for some length of time...The more you share, the more people might be able to help you decide on what would be a good type of school...

Sorry, I agree the question was rather vague - I have added more details now!
The move to GA will be a permanent one so we are making decisions for the long term.
I think I am just about getting my head around the US school system. My children will be 5 and 4 by Sept and will therefore both be Kindergarten age (K5 and K4). I am unsure if all state schools offer K4 and how widely available it is? She has already been attending pre-school in the UK for a year! Do you know the situation with this at all?
I have read a lot about the differences between private versus state schools and there seem to be lots of varying opinions. We are visiting schools in March, and will have a look at both private and state, so that we can make our own minds up.
Do you have any opinions on this?

I am sure it is too late for me to give you any help, as you have probably already moved. I have had experience teaching in Sheffield, UK. There is a huge difference in our school here and the ones there. I would advise not jumping straight into private schooling. The public school system offers just as much. Mill Creek is an amazing school however it may be a culture schock for the kids, as will any school here in Statesboro.

Hopefully you had a great time visiting in March. Your 4 year old will attend Pre-K, your 5 year old will attend Kindergarten. Where they attend school will largely depend on where you decide to live in Statesboro. Most children must attend the school in which they are zoned. The state of Georgia offers free Pre-school. Unfortunately, most schools have already had a drawing to determine who will be able to attend. There are only a certain number of spots availible and they fill up quickly. I see no reason to pay for your children to attend a private school in Bulloch county becuase the public schools are wonderful. Do you know what school your children will be attending? Please feel free to email me at any time with any other questions. linzp1228@gmail.com
