In My Own Words

Hi everybody, I am a single mom with 1 daughter in public school in the 10th grade.I went crazy searching for a good high school for my daughter to attend. She is very smart, but her grades do not reflect it. She has been in Chicago Public Schools since kindergarten. She has been on the honor roll many times, but as she got older the schools focus seemed less on education and more on tests and behavior issues. We left Chicago and moved to a suburb with one of the highest ranking high schools in Illinois and in the country. She tested into all of their honors classes. The school is tough, but they teach and my daughter is thriving. One of my many fave parenting moments is when I taught my daughter to read. I have read to her since she was a baby, and she adores reading.Right now she is reading "Abundance", the story of Marie Antoinette. I remember if a word was long how she would look at me with hesitation. I would tell her that the book was just paper and ink and that she was stronger than the words. I would tell her to put the words in a headlock and break them down. She'd laugh and "conquer" the difficult word. One of my pet peeves is stereotypes. The most difficult part of my day is getting my daughter to get all of her homework done without falling asleep. She has a long day, (cross country, too)but it's all worth it.
