In My Own Words

We attended a private (parochial) school for seven years prior to switching to Westerville City Schools. Our children attended Blendon Middle School and our youngest had one year at Cherrington Elementary School. I've always been interested in education - contemplated home schooling more than once, thoroughly researched education options in our area prior to our eldest starting kindergarten, and even after that year, for various reasons. I believe in traditional education, not progressive education. I believe all children can learn, but that all may learn in different ways. I believe that all children need constant attention and assistance when they are young and learning difficult subjects (reading for some, writing for others, etc.). I believe parents must be involved with their children on a daily basis, with their education and even, yes, their social lives. I do not believe in standards-based REPORTING systems (wishy washy report cards that are subjective). I do believe in percentage-based reporting, percentage-based letter grades, which are objective. We left the Columbus Diocesan schools in part due to their mandated reporting system (subjectively applied standards-based), which did not encourage students to higher academic achievement. We've seen a great improvement with our two sons attitudes toward academics and they have had many more academic opportunities in the Westerville school system than they had at their former school.
