I am a parent of 2 grown children and 2 (adopted at birth) teenagers. Our youngest two each have learning issues but test very high on aptitude tests. They sailed through elementary school on their smarts but things began to fall apart in Middle School. Getting homework done, striving to do your best, interest in college all seem to have disappeared. One has a goal but the other is straddling the fence.
Oh, to go back to the years when they adored and listened to you! My pet peeves for ages 12-18 are public schools that catered only to the 4-yr college bound and do not have resources and classes for those with a "different learning style". I'm stymied on how to instill motivation in these kids! It has to be their motivation or it won't work but I can't figure out how to get them thinking about it.
My favorite memories are when the kids were still interested in school and they would share interesting new information with me! I loved seeing their inquisitive minds turned on. As you can tell, I loved learning and wish I could instill that in their minds (a little late, I know). I feel God gives us talents and skills to make a mark in the world for the better and it absolutely frustrates me when people just sit and do nothing.
I have a couple of favorite pictures of my kids. My daughter and her best friend started an American Girl club and the parents really got involved by building a covered wagon and sewing pioneer outfits while we taught them more about early America. They loved it! I picture my son lying on the grass with his floppy (real) dog and wearing his red rain boots. It is a picture of his loving personality.
Parents I'd Like to Meet
I'd like to meet more high school parents of ADHD kids.
